Hans Wegner, THE CHAIR

‘The Chair’, the iconic JH503 model, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949.

A vintage edition produced by the historic manufacturer, master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Copenhagen, which ceased trading in 1990.

This armchair gained international fame after being used during the first televised US presidential debate in 1960 between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon.

Made from teak, with the seat reupholstered by the Atelier Vladimir Boson using period De Sede leather equivalent to the original.

Manufacturer’s stamp on the frame.

Featured in the permanent collections of museums such as the MOMA and VITRA

The Danish designer behind 500 creations, including over 100 chairs that went into production!

Trained as a joiner, Wegner knew everything there was to know about wood and was passionate about it. For him, choosing the right wood for the right project was therefore paramount. Indeed, the properties of a particular type of wood must be matched with certain designs and not others. This ensures the quality and durability of the pieces.

In practical terms, this results in a ‘Z’-shaped joint on the backrest of this armchair that is both exceptionally beautiful and very sturdy.
