Kazak rug, Caucasus, early 20th century.
Geometric patterns and small stylised animals and birds. Hand-knotted; the warp, weft and pile are made entirely of naturally dyed wool.
This type of carpet is often found in conjunction with mid-20th-century furniture. We sometimes come across them at estate sales; we set aside the vast majority – mass-produced copies from the second half of the 20th century – and retain only the finest and rarest examples, handcrafted at the very beginning of the 20th century or even earlier.
